"The Britannia Outreach/Streetfront Hooksum Outdoor School Camp Trip 2007 was an amazing experience for students and staff. The Hooksum Outdoor School family of Karen and Steven Charleson, their daughter Missy (Estella), son-in-law Alex, and Alex’s children (and Steven and Karen’s grandchildren), Wayne (13) and Tiana (6) are a living example of how, before contact and colonialism, multigenerational families shared a longhouse and a life together. Through shared work, learning by doing, respect for the land and resources, and laughter and community building, the Hooksum family brought us into their family/longhouse – and we didn’t want to leave."
- Steve Garrod, head teacher, Britannia Outreach
“I think we have just decided that every year we will bring a Ballenas group to Hooksum so just book us in around the same time each year automatically…The Ballenas kids have some great stories to tell. Darren and I just smiled stupid for quite a few days after getting back when people asked us how the trip went…”
- Allen Halverson, teacher Ballenas Secondary
"This wilderness experience has allowed me to see the light and balance that nature provides."
